Introduction

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter and the glory of kings to search it out.

Proverbs 25:2

What follows is a work in progress as God kindly grants me insights into questions that have troubled me for many, many years.

I have always wondered why I say the things I say or do the things I do– when often times, I (whoever that is) didn’t want to say what I said or do what I did. If these questions have ever troubled your thoughts, then these pages can offer you some understanding.

Years ago, when in the earliest steps of my walk with Jesus, I struggled daily in my attempts to understand myself. I desperately wanted to learn so that I could become a better servant of God. I knew I was saved and had a growing relationship with Jesus, but the battle for obedience raged in me. My mouth often said things I regretted. I did things that brought me shame.

My Bible studies led me to Hebrews 4:12. This rich verse gave me some hope of someday understanding this big mess:

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it pierces even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow. It judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Hebrews 4:12

God’s living, active (or powerful) Word is so sharp and able to pierce that it can divide soul and spirit. This inspired me to keep watch in my studies for ways God’s word would help me form a model to distinguish these unseen parts of who we are. God has been kind to me and has brought me all the way from an alcoholic, drug-addicted college student to a pastor of a wonderful country church. What God has taught me can help others. In fact, in the state of the world today, unless these foundational Biblical principles are relearned, our world is over– and I mean that with a huge sigh of sadness.

In a nutshell, a human being, in its current state, is multiple motivators all wrestling for control over a single decision center. This situation is complicated since the strongest and most powerful of these motivators is a broken, corrupted, and sinful soul desiring to act in a way that runs contrary to God. Without proper training and education, this situation can turn humans into beasts. With proper training and education, the situation can be controlled, but only God can bring a perfect resolution to this dis-harmony.

If you’re asking, “How do I know all this?”, then please read on. It may take studying several foundational articles before a proper basis for a better understanding is built. But once that foundation is laid, I promise you a model that will answer most of your questions.

A man’s steps are from the LORD, so how can anyone understand his own way?
